Most effective managers know how to motivate employees, but sometimes
their attempts in motivating employees has the opposite effect. The
following eight actions, as listed by
nfib.com, are sure to demotivate your workers and kill employee engagement.
1. Criticizing them publicly.
It may seem like a good idea to call out employees in front of their
coworkers, reasoning that the public display will deter others from
making the same mistakes. Don’t do it! Odds are everyone involved will
feel bad and awkward during and after the critique. Instead, if an
employee must be reprimanded, do it behind closed doors, and see if you
can turn it into a coaching opportunity.
2. Failing to praise.
Employees want to know that their hard work is noticed and
appreciated. Nothing will kill employee engagement faster than wondering
what the point of all that hard work is. If your goal is motivating
employees, praising them for their accomplishments is one of the best
and fastest ways to do so.
3. Not following up.
If you solicit ideas from your employees, make sure to keep them
updated about the status—both success and failure. Asking for advice and
not following through shows a huge lack of respect, and is certain to
diminish employee engagement.
